I pay for my protection now. I Got burned on a .mp3 embedded virus years ago using freeware spy/antivirus software. My IP address was used to perform a DoS attack on Aarons Furniture Corp. HQ so Time Warner (RoadRunner) was kind enough to tell me about it by suspending my service. That blew cause i took me days to clean up my puter.
I use McAfee Total Protection now. No problems.
