I think you may be talking about when webmasters set up a network of sites. Typically the sites are in related markets and with various cross linking strategies can help each other with inbound links and traffic. But I think in general G either does not like or ignores links from other sites you own (don't remember exactly) so you need to be aware of that.

But bottom line is it's an advanced strategy newbies should not even be thinking about right now. Put all your energy into your core site and learn to make it work before thinking about branching out too much.
