I tried to run a forum, and the spammers killed me. It would take an hour to clean it up everyday, and since the forum was aimed at general audiences, and the SPAM usually wasn't I had to keep it off!
How do you guys run a forum that doesn't get targetted?
Thanks...I also posted this in my introduction, but I actually was getting legitimate members too, and I think it was a very good forum idea, but I couldn't keep up with the moderations.
It might look like we don't get targeted because a lot of effort is put into keeping it under control and removing it as quickly as possible.
Once a lot of spammers see that they have an easy target they will multiply and if spam is left for long periods of time on a regular basis, it will give that impression.
Members who spam are banned and sometimes they are banned while they are in the act of spamming.
It is kept under control 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are no hours of the day or night that spammers can spam and expect their spam to remain for a long time. We have a way to deal with that.
Serial spammers try various tricks to try to spam us. I won't go into those tricks, but they don't work. After a while they just get tired of trying their tricks and give up.
It is very hard work keeping up with all of the spam. We get hit with a lot more of it here at 5 Star than most members are aware of. The good thing is that isn't allowed to become a problem.
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that you'd tell me to use some magic spam prevention software, and all my problems would vanish! Well, since I'm a one woman show, I guess managing a forum is out of the picture until I can recruit other moderators.
For now, I'll stick to using a blog with a comment feature I guess. It's easier to control.
It's pretty sad. My forum was aimed at women, and the spammers were usually promoting adult products aimed at men. I have no idea what they accomplish.
I was hoping Larwee would answer because he's the Spam control master
around here.
He's online around the clock it seems and always catches the spam before I even get to it.
He's right. When spammers see their spam deleted right away and see that we are on top of it they go away to find easier targets.
