Matt Cutts and others from Google have made it abundantly clear that there is no built-in PR advantage to edu or gov sites, or any other TLD, and nothing special about a DMOZ/ODP link. Such links are valued the same as any other links - the PageRank of that page, the total number of outgoing links (including internal navigation links) on the page, and the relevance of the content of that page to the page receiving the link.

Can a link from an edu page increase traffic? That depends entirely on the credibility and visibility of that specific .edu page. If it's a student blog, you'll almost certainly see little or no traffic (or SEO benefit). If you manage to get promoted on one of the front pages or high traffic pages of an edu site, maybe, if your page is relevant to whatever visiotrs to the edu site are trying to find.

I doubt that the issue is going to have any practical reality for most affiliate marekting sites.
