The key is to create content around a niche and then add links to products that relate to the niche. So you have your own visitors that come to your site to learn more about gardening (or whatever) as they are reading your site you have a link to a good gardening book or tool or whatever.

So yes if someone knows what they want to buy they may go straight to Amazon. But if you have visitors on your site interested in your niche, you can recommend products they want/need/possibly were planning to buy anyway - but if they click your link and buy, you get the credit.
