I work in IT support and the only tool I use right now for ridding computers of malware is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. You can get it from malwarebytes.org. I've used Spybot S&D in the past but I consider it obsolete because it's much slower and doesn't detect as many threats.

The way I suggest using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is to keep it updated and run a quick scan as often as you feel necessary. The full scan takes much longer and has never found anything the quick scan has not in my experience.

This is a free program although there is a module you can pay for to prevent malware from ever being installed. I can't comment on the paid module because I've never needed it.

Also you should download and run CCleaner available from ccleaner.com BEFORE you run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to speed up the initial scan process. Just keep in mind running CCleaner with default settings will empty your recycle bin and anything saved in Internet Explorer like passwords and recently visited web sites.
