Good News for California Affiliates re Advertising Tax AB 178

California affiliates can breathe a sigh of relief, for now. The hearing for AB 178 was canceled yesterday which means we should be safe from this issue for the remainder of 2009, as the bill does not come up for a vote again until January 2010. So the bill was not defeated, however a postponement is still a very positive development.

Thanks to all who wrote letters and lobbied in any way. Thanks especially to the PMA and all the industry leaders that helped to coordinate efforts and fight against this bill. Working together we CAN make a difference!

What we have to be careful of here, is packaging. The gov' will go an repackage the bill to make it seem attractive to a majority of the nay sayers...but the basic bill will actually accomplish the same result (tax).

Yes some of the leaders that are watching this are aware that could happen and keeping their eye on things to be sure it doesn't get slipped in.

I just got an email from CJ that this is back on the chopping block and could be voted on as early as next week:

ALL HANDS ON DECK! California's budget tax bill now includes "affiliate nexus" language and could be voted on as early as next week! Commission Junction is opposed to the internet retail tax and this language in general, and we strongly encourage you to send a letter of opposition to Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny (senator.ducheny at sen.ca.gov). But don't stop there:

* Navigate to the California State Assembly web site
* Use the "Find My District" link on the left of the home page and then type in your address and zip code to find your district number. Close that window.
* Use the "Assembly Roster" link on the home page to find links to email your assembly member.


We encourage you to use email and phone calls to express your opposition.

Blackpool this is an old thread, things have changed a lot since then.
And you would not have gotten an email about it unless you lived in California.

To update this thread...

The nexus language was slipped into a budget bill so we had to fight again. But so far the Governor has vetoed it so CA is once again safe, at least for now.
