Wordpress is the best platform around. It's extremely easy to work with and very versatile. You can build all kinds of sites with it. I've used Drupal and every other platform, but nothing comes close to Wordpress.
I gave Drupal a try to compare it to Wordpress. I have to say that Wordpress is way easier to use and way faster on your server as well. If you're going to go with a CMS Wordpress is the best choice.
I believe they actually won the 2009 CMS award this year for the first time.
