Hi Vicki,

Length of time is not as important as several other factors. It could take a year to get a sale if you are only getting 10 visits a day and only one out of 10 click. Or you could get 1,000 visitors from the wrong kinda traffic and no one will click at all.

Things that could be playing into the equation are the type of product (some convert easier than others), how targeted your traffic is and how many impressions and clicks you've gotten.

Keep in mind too with Amazon the cookie is only 1 day, so if you target computers or high cost items that people tend to shop, compare and think about before buying you have less chance of getting commission. Not sure if that's the issue though.

Tell us the general product category, how you are marketing and how many clicks a month you get and we may be able to give you something more specific to go on. Also if you are comfortable sharing your site you can ask for a site review in that forum and maybe if we see what you are doing we can give you some tips.

Although I've made some money with Amazon on a few sites, for the most part they are not a top performer for me.

There are two main reasons, Linda touched on them both.

1. Most of my aff sites deal in high dollar products
2. The 1 day session cookie. IMHO, that's a joke especially when a lot of other companies have 7 or more day cookies.

Just my 3 cents worth.

Don

Wow.. A year with no income. I would certainly discontinue any revenue stream that didn't show results in a year... I can see waiting 3 or 6 months for a sale. But I'd need to see steady / regular growth to stay with it.

I also agree with Linda - EVERYTHING depends on what you're doing. If you think posting a few links and waiting for checks to roll in will work - I think you've already seen that it's harder than that. While it's a big big Internet, there are also MANY MANY people after those consumers. You need a traffic strategy and hard / consistent work... Then you'll see the sales commissions.. IMHO

I'm going to discontinue my Amazon ads on my Hubpages, because I get no hits at all. I don't want to just wait around another 6 months to see if it picks up.

I'm going to try using more targeted ads, with the products I choose myself, on my independent pages, and see what happens.

I've been very disappointed in my Amazon affiliation, honestly.

IMO, any affiliate program with only a 1 day cookie should be ashamed of themselves!

You can try Indigo Books & Music through the Commission Junction network. They have a 45 day cookie.

Tony

Ditto's -- that's crazy. I would drop Amazon like a hot potato and find something better. There's a plethora of great programs out there. When I first started about 8 years ago I, too did the Amazon thing and never made one red cent. It's over rated...

You guys kidding? Amazon is my best earner!! The conversions are simply great. People know and trust the brand. So your only trick is getting the buyer connected with the right product based on their interest. That means, know your niche, know your buyer, and let the Amazon brand do the rest..

Great points purdue512.

Since the AZ cookie is only one day they type of products you promote would be a factor too. If you promote big ticket products or electronics - those are examples of things that typically have a longer buying cycle and people can shop and compare for days or even weeks before buying.

Also if your copy tends to attract people who are in the info gathering stage rather than in buy now mode, you'll lose out too.

The other advantage to AZ besides brand is the huge variety of products and the cool tools they offer. I would think with the right niche that has hungry buyers, ready to buy today, some affiliates could do OK.
