Microsoft Security Essentials IS a good antivirus program. I've tried most of them: McAfee, Norton, Avira, Avast, etc., and MSE is the best performing. It's also free. And it finds, detects, and removes other types of malware efficiently and without eating up your resources the way many do.
Periodically, I do run Ad-Aware or Spybot but really all they pick up are ad cookies which are harmless - MSE gets the rest.
