After all I keep hearing, I'm not sure I want to waste time with adsense. So for those of you who do use it, is it really worth it?

No, most of my revenue is not generated via adsense. However, Adsense provides a nice passive income you should not overlook by complimenting the products or services you promote on your website. Also look into the Yahoo! Publisher Network. they pay very well but their ads are less targeted because they do not have the inventory that Adwords has.
Adsense is a good way to produce multiple streams of income. I've had good luck using it on pages that get a lot of traffic but don't generate sales.
This is for physical product websites I own.
I don't like to put it on pages that promote affiliate products though
