Default Internet Laws for Article Re-Posting

Does anyone have a link to a site with the rules and regulations regarding article reposting on a site other than 5 star?

ie. Say I find a great article on a topic and want to republish it on my website. What credits do I need to give? do I need the author's permission? etc.

Thanks

Hi fastfish720,

Technically you can't publish an article without permission EVEN IF you give credit. It's stealing. If you took all the time to research and write an article, you'd want people coming to your site to read it. You would not want people to take your article and put it on their site for their own benefit.

Here is the actual government doc that explains "fair use."
Here is more detailed info from wikipedia.

Read #3 and 4 of the gov doc.

How much you can quote is subjective but here we only allow 1-2 paragraphs. If I quote a blog from someone I know in the industry who I'm sure would not mind I sometimes do more. But technically only 1-2 paragraphs is in the safe zone.

THE EXCEPTION is articles from article directories. People put them there because they WANT them republished. Then you CAN copy the entire article, just need to add their specified author credit paragraph including their live link(s).

You are confusing article submission and article stealing.

You are allowed to repost an article from a site that EXPLICITY STATES that you are allowed to. For example, you can go to EzineArticles.com and report any article from them provided you leave the links intact.

You cannot go to somebody's blog and repost their content.

Wouldn't it also depend on what article submission site as well? I know i frequently use article directories that have strict policies against just taking an article even if you give proper credit. Before you take an article from any directory read the terms and rules first!

This is not re article directories but the original Q about how much of someone's post or even a news article can you put on your site. Interesting debate.

Well know any link regarding this but its very simple just publish that article while giving link to the site from where you get it, and as an compliments add some thing really good about that page on your site, i use to do it for couple of web sites providers and affiliate sites, e.g i pick a lot of articles from Web Host Butler. Never ask their web masters, in fact they use to email me for saying thanks, as i was trying to promote their sites as well.

The process I use is to go ahead and do what you want to do, link to the original, and email the source letting them know you've done it. Don't ask permission - just let them know, as a courtesy.

Usually, when doing this (though I've never done it for commercial purposes), I get either no response (tacit approval), a thank-you from the source, or even a link to my reprint. It is extremely rare that someone says "don't republish that", and even then, they can't stop me from keeping a link to the original... that's the entire purpose of the web. Just remember that if they say "no", you pull it down immediately and email them to let them know you've done it and where they can go to confirm it's been removed. An apology is nice, but not always necessary - let the tone of their refusal dictate your response, although you should never be rude back to them no matter how rude they are.

And remember, the content belongs to them. You have no right to post it; they're not violating any of your freedoms. So if they say "no", don't puff up your chest and say nasty things about it. Be nice, be friendly, and accept that some people simply don't want republication. It's theirs, so respect their rights.
