Duplicate content penalty?

I was considering purchase on an article submission software. Still deciding on that one right now. One thought popped up in my head, is having the same article on different sources going to penalize you?

Should you have different article for different directories? That's going to kill me or anyone for sure having so many different articles for major directory submission.

claims that it can help you avoid duplicate content penalty. I would like to know what are other members thoughts on this topic. Any thoughts??

Well Duplicate content is ok within pages of one website .. but if content of pages from two website is same.., then it is a problem.

There is so much confusion about duplicate content and a lot of people have the wrong idea.
