Automated Article Submission Programs?

I have some questions for those really experienced with articles and submissions.

I hear some people say you don't want to used automated programs to submit articles because it will hurt your website. I hear others say that the automated article submission programs are the best thing since sliced bread.

Who do I believe? What is really the best way to submit articles?

And if automated article submission programs are good, what are the best programs to use? Any free ones?

I have seen websites that offer articles to be posted by people every week to eliminate these auto posters. They offer services for craigslist postings, yahoo, msn, myspace, bookmarking ect.
