One of the things that will set you back is not knowing the AM jargon. There's a few really good glossaries of online marketing terms that you should read up on. If you google marketing terms you'll find them, I believe.
I keep reading about how difficult it is for us minnows to compete againt the AM sharks in some of the more popular niches.
Can someone please explain, as best they can, what the experienced marketers are doing that n-oob's can't.
They say that the way to be successful in affiliate marketing is to try, test, fail and learn over and over.
So the Pros have already been through that and know all the pitfalls to avoid and all the 'good' tricks to leverage. They know how to write pre-sell copy better, know better about ad placement and sometimes have bonuses or other incentives to offer buyers. So they out sell the newbies.
When I mention sharks, they are a beyond Pros, very aggressive and they know all the 'bad' tricks to leverage as well. Some of the tricks can even steal commissions from the affiliate that should have gotten credit for the sale.
I primarily talk about how newbies can't compete with the sharks in the "make money online niche". Partly because it's so competitive and partly because how can a newbie say "let me show you how to make a ton of money online" when they have no clue how to even do the basics.

I think old timers used to have an advantage in PPC advertising, getting better click prices. Now it depends on quality score, so the oldtimers using landing pages have had to adjust. The other advantage some old timers seem to have is the knowledge and assets to get a new site ranked fast. Having a suite of PR4+ site to build link juice cant hurt.
As Linda said, the old timers know what works and does not work, saving them the days of frustration we newbies get to go through. On the plus side, many of them give valuable advice, which hopefully we can use to shorten that learning curve.
Being a minnow is not bad if you are the biggest one in a mud puddle. There you are competing against other minnows, once you master survival there and grow, you can just jump to a pond. Take some time there, grow, learn , get srtonger, learn new tricks, then jump to the lake, before you know it, you will be the biggest fish in the lake, then you can make the leap to the ocean.
By the time you get to the ocean, you will have the strenght, knowlege, wisdom and experience to deal with the sharks.
There are no jobs on the face of the earth that you start at the top of the ladder, it is a progression to the top, and you need to start at the bottom or you are doomed to fail as Linda stated. It prepares you for the bigger waters.
Wisdom will tell you it is better to be the shark in a mudpuddle than the minnow in the sea.
Take your time, start at the bottom and grow.
You can not give a 2 year old a harley, but a tricycle is fine, just right! Then they grow to the bike, then keep stepping up as you master each step.
You can do it, just keep focused and keep swimming, you will get there.

Finding this forum has been somewhat bitter-sweet. Definately more sweet than bitter though. Bitter because it has taken me from running in 3rd gear all the way down to granny gear because of all the information. I'm more of a "take action and figure it all out as it goes along" kind of guy. You know the type, sink or swim! $%&* or get off the pot! Sweet because I now have a place to inundate myself with all the information I need to be successful, without as much frustration. I know there will still be some frustration and failure (as some of you have said "test, fail, test, fail, and learn). But at least now I know that's the recipe for success. Hopefully, I can learn from others failures (as they've discussed here) and I can avoid most of the noob pitfalls lurking around the corner.
