Unhappy Pick a Niche You Know

I am sure that everyone has heard this a million times but I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

Pick a niche you know. THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT.

I learned the hard way, I picked niche that had some REALLY great KW, low competition and lots of searches.

BUT

It is a niche I know NOTHING about and have struggled to come up with content, write articles and generally LEARN the niche enough to promote and design my site. It is working out ok so far, BUT it is taking TONS more time (for research of niche/topics in niche etc...) and it is MUCH HARDER than when I use a niche I know and really care about!

With all that is involved with promoting, designing, marketing, writing articles, SEO, KW research and everything else that needs to be done in this biz, when you actually have to learn the niche it just adds a load of extra work AND it is not nearly as fun

Default Pick a niche you know, and/or....

A lot of people espouse the beneifts of picking a niche you know.

What' s often missed is that you should also pick a niche that you're good at, or sells a skills you have. It's not always about taking an interest you have and turning it into profit, but also about selling marketable skills as well.

Thanks,

Dan

I agree that it is easier to generate website content in a niche that you know. Problem is the business of affiliate marketing is about making money. So i would edit that by saying that you should pick a niche that you know which is profitable.

You can also pick a niche that you do not know but are interested in. Doing research for this would be a thrill because you are genuinely interested in the topic.

I personally have built websites in niches that i didn't know a lot about but wanted to know about. The process of researching content, useful content, for the sites was for me exciting and highly motivating.

The problem i think is a lot of newbies feel that they have to be experts from the start before they venture into a niche. This is not necessarily true. You can be sure though that by the time you get your website up, you will be an expert on the relevant topic

Just my two cents

You should generally choose a niche which you have knowledge on, passionate about and comfortable with. This will be beneficial in the long run.

There are always open resources in the net where you could go to learn more about a niche that you want to venture in. Remember that one important factor for a website to be successful is the content that you offer to your traffic.

While I typically put the vast majority of my effort sinto topics that I am passionate about, I have on occassion tried marketing niche's that I have no clue about. I have picked the randomest products I could find, and then did a good deal of research to write some articles and I'll be honest, I've made more money on these up to this point.

I started out exploring all sorts of topics for my sites. But in the past few months I've really narrowed them down to topics of my own interest. Not surprisingly, its been SO much easier to come up with content for them and I'm MUCH more motivated to actually work on the sites compared with working on a site about payday loans which is, whilst profitable, terribly boring to me.

Another idea I've heard recommended which is somewhere in between a money site (that may be boring and you know nothing about) and a passion site (topic you know and love but not profitable) is to pick a niche you don't know much about but would love to learn. Then even though you have to do research to come up with content, it's a topic you're excited about and wanted to learn about any way, so it works.

Obviously you always have to research to be sure there is a market and a way to monetize the niche.

You really have to pick a niche that you are passionate about, otherwise you'll lose interest in it too quickly and stop short of generating some revenure for something you like to talk about.

I don't really buy into the argument "you need to know you niche", you're probably just as well off not knowing, because you'll have so much more to write about when you start learning it.

As long as you choose something that you don't find boring or hate, anything is fair game.

Funnily enough since posting in this thread Ive started 2 sites about financial topics which I know very little about.
I've been using rewritten PLR articles to form the content and its working out very well
So thats an alternative way to work in a niche that you dont know alot about.
