Default Site Review Request Please

This site started out as a blog but how much can you say about scrapbook furniture right? So I changed it to a datafeeder site. After many visitors and no sells I switched to a blog with a link to a datafeeder/store.

I have visitors and no sells. I like scrapbboking and I like organizing so I thought this would be a good niche for me.

Any ideas on what I can change or do to get my site visitors to convert to sells?

Thanks in advance,
Julie

Hi Julie,

I think it looks great for a scrapbooking related site. Very cute! I'm not a designer or anything but I don't see any layout problems.

However some of your links don't work. Just checked a few on the homepage. The Shareasale product links go to an invalid links page. The Office Machine Stand, goes to a page with other products but not the stand. So I'd do some link checking more than anything.

Anyone else have any good feedback for Julie?

In your other thread, you said you "recently" converted this site... how recently?

About 4 weeks ago I converted from a blog to a datafeeder site with the store on the front page.

About a week ago I put the blog on the home page and a link to the store page. I figure this way I can blog about informational stuff instead of it just being a store site.

Your right Linda, lots of links broken. Unfortunately its the datafeeder service that I am using. Thats a bummer because they work through a wordpress pluggin that is real easy to use.

I don't think you gave the first change enough time. And you certainly haven't given the second change enough time.

The key is to be patient and and let things ferment and settle a little after any significant change. First, SEs need to spider the changes. Then they need to index them and you need to adjust optimization and links to get decent ranks. Ans then your visitors need to get used to the chang and new visitors need to find you.

I would generally suggest you wait at least a month as the absolute minimum and even that won't be enough to really evaluate a change, especially if you're not also monitoring SE changes over that time span. Three months is better.

Search engines are fast, but not that fast.

Thanks Minstrel,

I guess from here I just need to be patient. I was going off the stats I've seen...per 100 visitors you should have made a couple sells.

I think I will leave it as it is (fixing the broken links of course) with blog and store.

The thing is, those 100 visitors probably clicked through from existing search listings, which were likely for your old blog site. How many of those were expecting something quite different when they clicked through? Howe ever many there were, that would need to be deducted from the 100 visitors to get "true" visitors for your "new" site.

And it may even have been all 100...

Hi Julie,

Here are a few things you might want to look at.

1) page download time. I'm using DSL light and it did take quite a few seconds to download - like, 20 or something, which seemed like an awfully long time. You might want to shrink the file size of your graphics so that it loads quicker. Slow loads can make people click away before they even see what you're offering.

2) keywords. I'm not that familiar with your topic so can't comment on the value of the keywords in your All-in-One SEO. Do they get many searches (I mean, like hundreds a day or more)?

3) just fantasizing here, but if I were searching for one of your keywords (let's say, scrapbooking room), I would expect to see something about that as soon as I land, but I don't. It's farther down the page. That might be something to look at. What are the most popular keywords that are bringing people to your page? Head up your page with that KW in your headline. Or find some way to summarize all that you offer in a generic headline that spells out what you offer using your keywords. Something like:

"Looking for scrapbooking organizers, frames and other useful items for your favorite hobby? You're in the right place."

4) Your site title is "scrapbooking furniture" but you open with a digital frame. If I were looking for furniture, I would expect to find furniture - like special desks, laptop platforms, ergonomic seats, storage cupboards and the like. Perhaps your visitors will be more inclined to look around if you had furniture-type products at the top of the landing page. Related scrapbooking products can be categorized separately (frames, organizers, display packaging, etc.). Or you could always change the title.

5) I'd shrink the physical size of your top banner graphic as it takes up almost the whole first screen when people land. Better would be a graphic that stands perhaps around 1 inch high so that your visitors see content quickly, rather than having to scroll past that banner.

6) I realize you're using a merchant feed (?) but you could grab the reader's eye much quicker if the image was on the left and the description was on the right. It takes a few seconds to figure out what that first graphic is - the digital frame. Some merchants can provide you with a different feed if the one they provide is not compatible with your site. It's worth asking.

7) Feeds can make for easy site management, but originality might work better. It depends on your market. If the visitor expects to see a store, then perhaps that's the right approach. This is something you'll have to investigate.

Gee, I hope I haven't scared you.

Just suggestions, mind you.

Sylvia

Wow! Thanks Sylviad,

I'm going through each and every suggestion you gave me with a fine tooth come.

No, you didn't scare me. The more critiquing the better.

I have downsized the size of my images. Hopefully that helps with download times. I'll find a site that can test that for me and keep an eye on it.

Thank you very much for all the advice. It should keep me busy most of the day.
