Default Need Others Opinion On Site Design

I'm looking for a few outside opinions on my website geared towards the retail automotive business. I orginally developed this site as a way to simply share a few Microsoft Excel templates I developed for the dealership I work for.

As you will see I got a little out of control over time and became very interested in affilation marketing. Hoping I could pickup some additional cash. The problem I'm facing is there just isn't much money in it to justify the time involved and I'm considering shutting the site down.

Looking for some ideas that may help me make some additional money so I don't have take this route.

Your reviews would be greatly appreciated. The main domain is Automotive Management Solutions | Dealership Employment | Automotive Marketing | Automotive Software | Automotive News | AutomotiveProfit.com. You'll see that a heavy concentation of the site is geared towards employment. This is simply due to the fact affiliation income was available.

Thanks

Hi JustVisiting,

I would recommend moving your advertising higher on the page. Check out this graphic by Google on where the best places to put ads are (https://www.google.com/adsense/suppo...54&topic=8437).

Hope this helps.

Hi JustVisiting,

Welcome to 5 Star.

Well you have picked a great niche - great because you know alot about it.
The site looks nice. I'll throw out a couple ideas I can think of off the top of my head, even though I don't know your industry as well as you do.

Assuming that your target market is car dealers and car sales people???

There are some job board affiliate programs where you can display their job listings for car sales and then also charge your visitors to place job ads.

Also car dealerships and sales people would be interested in sales books, sales training, etc. Tony Robbins and Brian Tracy both pro sales and motivation trainers both have affiliate programs. One of our clients managed the Brian Tracy program. Or even just Amazon for sales training books. Then just think of anything else people in your industry would be interested in buying.

You may also want to start a consumer focused section about how to buy a car and feature car loans, car parts, car insurance and car buying affiliate programs. There are tons in this sector.

Hope this helps. Anyone else have suggestions?`

Actually you should add Adsense to top of page and top of sidebar. That would be an easy way to make money and in your niche there could be some fairly high paying keywords.

Just a couple quick design notes:

- What kind of traffic numbers are you getting now? A key factor of course in monetizing your page is to build up some nice traffic.

- Try to keep your navigation consistent throughout the pages. I notice on some pages your navigation is on the top, and others it's on the right hand side.

- Not a big fan of relying on pop-ups/pop-unders. So many blockers out there now.

- Get your forum populated with a few posts, even if you have to do it yourself under different userids. People go to a forum and see only 1 or 2 posts, generally they'll just leave rather than get involved. An active forum will bring more new and returning visitors.

- As mentioned previously, get your ads up above the fold.

To all that offered some great ideas - I want to say thank you.

But allow me to give you a little more information as to what I'm against.

1). As for repositioning Adsense, Google seems to have it pretty wrapped-up.
Upon repositioning my Google ads I do enjoy a better click-thru and at the same time my revenues per click seem to drop, while my cost per keyword goes up. Never seem to come out ahead. Starting to think this is a game Google likes to play with people so they (Google) can generate income, while I struggle to get ahead.

2). My biggest source of income would be generated by sparking an interest in the automotive dealer to list on my site (Allowing me to roll the revenue into SEM). Yet, with a potential customer base of over 21,000 dealerships, I can hardly get a response. Now, why is that - I guess they just don't believe that a passive employment web site can be benefical, they would perfer to spend thousands of dollars in print publications. Also, the average automotive dealer is still struggling to get their website functional, even though they are mandated by the manufacturers to spend 20k+ a year for an internet presence. Possibly I'm ahead of the times.

3). As for traffic, since it is a limited niche market I do believe that 200 visitors a day is respectable - yet, unprofitable.

4). The pop-up, just an experiment. The menu bars, currently redesigning from left, to top, to right. No position seems to extend pageviews past an average of 4.

5). The Forum, great idea - but it just bothers me to create a false impression. I'll consider it.

I guess the big question is how do I create a profitable market that doesn't exist. The Employment concept seems to be a logical approach for dealerships to recruit.

Thank you again,
