Well depends on the topic.
The ONLY time I see long sales letters (which I hate) is on high pressure internet marketing, get rich quick type of sites. So if you are focusing on "high pressure internet marketing, get rich quick" types of products you may have to, to compete. (But I've already said that's the WORST place to start) But I STILL think even on that type of site people are sick of it and think it looks spammy. All the different colors, big letters, highlights etc just scream high pressure.
The other thing subtly and psychologically I think those long sales pages are trying to do is say
"I know you are a newbie and you are desperate to make money -
so if I scream at you loud enough and LONGGGGGG enough -
many of you will be stupid enough to buy!"
l guess it's obvious by now how much I hate that whole market.
If you are marketing main stream REAL products (vs info products) like luggage, guitars, blenders, shoes they NEVER have long sales pages. A little pre-sell and some testimonials on your site is good, but a long IM style sales letter would turn average Joe consumer off.
