Successfully getting dugg at digg.com and netscape.com

First a disclaimer: I couldn't figure out where this thread really belonged, but "Destination Success" seemed the most logical spot.

I'm always looking for ways to create "grassroots" buzz around my site and Linda's thread Warning Amazon Associates - DMCA Legal Threats and subsequent request for a digg, finally convinced me to give digg.com and subsequently www.beta.netscape.com a try.

I've come to realize that unless you are a "major" online news organization, the odds are very slim that one of your articles would get voluntarily dugg at these sites. In order to really have any hopes of attracting attention, one must first digg their own articles or have someone do it for them.

Simply getting an article listed is not enough. These sites are promoted as democracies where the "best" articles make it to the top by members voting for them. In the U.S. election process it isn't always the best candidate or ballet initiative that wins its the side that can turn out the most voters that wins. The same is true when it comes to getting dugg. It is the article "promoter" that can turn out the most votes that will raise to the top.

As a result it is important to build up a network of "friends" who will reliably vote for each other's articles/digg listings. One way to build up one's network of "friends" is via forums like this one.

www.Dugg.com and www.beta.netscape.com, could be good marketing tools for us if we worked together. I propose that we use this thread to give our usernames for those two sites and a link to our profiles to those sites so that members of these forums can add each other to their "friends" list so that we can start voting for each other's postings. Of course we would also to link to our digg listings so that others could more easily vote.

One suggestion I do have is that we make sure we only try to promote our best articles so that we don't simply become a bunch of digg spammers. Also actually reading each other's articles and providing useful comments can help the digging process.

Just a quick followup comment. Based on http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2006/...cial-software/ it would appear that it is wisest not to create threads for digg exchanges. I; however, see nothing wrong with people joining digg.com and then adding each other to their "friends" list and then checking out and voting on each other's diggs.

So add your digg profile to this thread and we can at least make eachother "friends" so that we can keep an eye on each other's posts and vote for them when appropriate.

I'm all for digging each other, but I didn't read that thread to see what the problem is. Maybe Digg bans for asking people to digg ya?

Basically I think it is better to have a group of "friends" who one pays more attention to and diggs on a regular basis than to directly exchange digg votes. This doesn't mean we should always digg our "friends" posts but simply make sure to read them and vote when appropriate.

I think digg (and some of the other social networking sites) have some type of detection for when a specific group always diggs the same stories.

This is why one shouldn't only digg/vote for posts within their group and one shouldn't always digg/vote for all posts within one's group. Rather one should simply pay closer attention to posts by their friends. It doesn't really subvert the purpose of these types o site, rather it simply acknowledges that the more "friends" one has or more popular one is, the more votes one tends to get.

What I'm simply doing is promoting the idea of getting as many people as possible from this site and other forums to join a group to create as big of a circle of friends as possible.

I would say to retain your independance. I have a group of 22 "friends" on digg whose opinions I respect.

How I use this though, is to see what they're digging and that's my start point. Social networking is me wanting to read what they're reading. That's not the same as just digging their stories at all.

I have a squidoo lens where I link into the articles I've submitted and the stories I've dugg - giving more inbound links to Digg and in a round about (but will it work?) way back to me: http://www.squidoo.com/digg-com/

I do submit my own articles and have been lucky enough that they've flown beneath the radar and they haven't been spammed. Some have even got into double digits

I think you are right that this is the safest way and smartest way to participate in these social networking sites. The problem is that as new members it is nearly impossible to build up lists of friends without soliciting friends via other sources like this forum.

Potentially, but I wouldn't expect that someone I have as a friend to have me as their friend.

Online friends build slowly (unless you're at MySpace) just like they do in real life.
