Glad to hear you're enjoying WordPress. Yes, I was referencing the old blogger, and I do know that you could publish entries to your domain through FTP, but you needed your own hosting account and it seemed somewhat pointless to me -- again, simply my opinion. Also, I've heard about and witnessed far too many horror stories of blogs (legit ones) being deleted or locked. Sorry, but I can't see entrusting my hard work to anyone besides myself or people I select myself.
As for design customization, WP is pretty flexible, moreso than Blogger -- once you get the hang of it. To learn more, I suggest exploring the
theming section at the Codex, and looking into
widgets.
