Hi Lovely,
Feeds themselves aren't a way to link back to popular sites. The links happen within the content of a blog entry. Feeds are a way for visitors to read the content without needing to
visit the website. Mainly this is done with a feed reader (examples:
Sage for Firefox,
Bloglines online, or
Feed Reader). These feed readers allow the users to monitor as many feeds as they want from a central location. In essence, feeds are convenient for your readers.
Feeds can help your blog become popular because it makes it easier for more people to stay up to date with your content. As you produce something noteworthy, people may end up blogging about it with a link back to your blog.
Other ways that feeds can be used is for site aggregation at hub sites, like Linda's
Affiliate Buzz. Using a feed script, a webmaster can pull content from various feeds and publish it on her site with a link back to the original source. But, be warned, this can also be used for evil (i.e. scrapers and content stealing).
Hope that gives you some ideas.
