Default Considerations before Hosting a web site

To upload your site after designing it is very important to purchase a reliable hosting package. Selecting hosting packages completely depends on the type of your site. You should have a hosting package at least few MB more then your total size of the website. If it is portal website or job site or any thing like this you must have higher bandwidth and above 99% uptime because it is not you may loose many important visitor or visitors may not find interest in your site to visit.

99% is not that that great...since the 1% downtime tend to occur during the busiest time of the day (when your website should be making money). I'd look for 99.9%.

I would also vote for more diskspace. If you plan to add content regularly and will run this business for years, your space must be ready to it. Because nice article directory with 7-10 categories around your niche very soon can deplete of space if you chose the cheapest solution possible.

And also note how support responds. Many things sooner or later come down to human factor, if the support is responsive about all your questions. This is a nice sign.

People always talk about 99% uptime being important, but rarely do they think about what goes into making a web host reliable or for that matter what 99% uptime really means.

If your web site really had 99% uptime for the month of July your site would be offline for a total of 7hrs 26min. For an entire year this is 87.6 hours of down time. Is this really acceptable to you? It isn't to me; I'm looking for several nines after the decimal point.

There is a lot one should consider when choosing a web host that most people never think of. I discussed this in another thread so rather than rehashing an old post I'll simply link to it here:
Tips on How To Select a Reliable Hosting Provider

An article I wrote on this subject awhile back is:

Great stuff you guys. Ken thanks for sharing your article with us.

My host has been down or slow A LOT. I really need to switch but I'm afraid to. In the past when I have it was a nightmare. Should probably bite the bullet and do it this summer while its slow.

If you are going to make any changes to your web hosting setup the slowest traffic times are the best time to do this. This means either making the switch during the summer (preferably 4th of July weekend), Labor Day weekend or Christmas/New Years. In general I think the days between Christmas and New Years are the best because this is when the fewest people are using the Internet world wide.

An very good example supporting what I wrote about choosing a web host was MySpace being off line for much of this past weekend due to a power outage (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/5209496.stm, http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/153...headlines=true). Apparently their servers are located in California, which fails as a hosting location for two reasons. First it is a geologically instable area which is prone to devastating earthquakes and two its political climate has created an antiquated and unreliable power grid that is very susceptible to power spikes caused by long hot spells. Apparently their data center's backup generators also failed to start, which violates another one of my rules about having adequate backup systems.
