It goes back a lot farther than that, to the days of silent films where in cowboy movies (and other movies with good guys and villains) the good guys always wore white hats (and not infrequently were otherwise dressed in white as well) and the bad guys always wore black hats. Look up photos of Hopalong Cassidy or Roy Rogers as examples.
