I suppose a lot would depend on how you utilize your blog and what type of people you "associate" with online. You hear good stories, and then you hear some nightmare stories, too.
I agree, and I'm pretty sure they are referring to the positive communities. After browsing the comments section on some of my favorite blogs it's clear that regular readers and the writers develop close friendships which I guess becomes a part of their daily socialization.
Personally, I prefer going out for drinks with my girlfriends in person, but to each their own
