I started working with SAS a few years back and shortly afterward figured out how to make money with their network. I'm going to throw it out there because I don't really feel like I'm giving anything away and I've proven that it works with several programs and several different managers.
Select a program that's getting some publicity because the manager is known or because it's being managed at SAS and Carolyn and Sarah are creating promotions, etc. What you want is some information about the products and whether or not the merchant knows how to convert (or is maybe getting an education publicly while you watch).
So, you've picked a program. Look the site over and see what they're doing wrong in the way of navigation or categorization or maybe even descriptions. Get acquainted with the manager via IM, email or phone and ask questions about what sells during which season and ask if there's any good keywords that aren't being overused, etc.
Now, ask the AM (or the merchant if you're lucky enough to be involved in a conversation with both) what you should know about selling x. What do they think is the market? the season? the reason? Pick their brain for anything you can put in your head so ideas will flow.
If you're serious, then take a section of your "test" site and build up one idea. Buy a good domain name for just that product (not the merchant, the product or the general category) and use that domain to expand on your idea or add new ones.
I think this works better with SAS than with the other bigger networks because you can actually have those conversations with the AM and the merchant. When you're promoting a big huge brand or big box store, you are not important to them at all until you hit huge numbers and maybe not even then. You can build up one thing at a time with a lot of help at SAS.
