Default Myspace Marketing 2

Capture Your Myspace Audience

Marketing yourself on Myspace is a direct extension of your business...with a touch of personalization and fun. Whether you operate a brick and mortar storefront or an online service/product, it is crucial you capture your profile visitors. Statisitcally speaking the "average" web surfer will only view your page for 10-15 seconds max before moving on if they find nothing of interest. That's not much time.

Customizing Your Page:

Since Myspace allows you to customize your page it's a very good idea to do so. Unless you're Tom, having a generic looking Myspace page will not generate as much interaction as a customized page. However, customizing your page is not that difficult and you do not need any HTML skills (although it helps). With the popularity Myspace has generated there are now online businesses specifically designed to help you format your profile. These free websites stay online from advertising revenues generated from the massive amount of daily traffic they receive. I'm sure many of you have used these types of services but if you're new to Myspace here are couple of good sites to get you started:

Myspace Support (my favorite)
Pimp Myspace

It's easy to get carried away when designing your new page. However, if you're here to network please remember it is much easier to read text on an all white or all black background.

Repeat Visitors:

Many people will add you to their list after visiting your page and that's about it. You'll never hear from them again. Although Myspace has a bulletin board system you can use, many people do not pay any attention to it. For the most part the bulletin board has become the ultimate spam platform for chain letters, quizzes and other insignificant "information".

A good method to prompt repeat visitors to your site and myspace profile is to place a newsletter signup block on your page. If you run a newsletter from your site it only makes sense to add that same code to your myspace page. Remember, you only have mere seconds to capture your audience so be sure to prominently display your newsletter offering on your page.

Advertising your newsletter from you Myspace account can significantly increase your backend sales. In addition, it creates a "buzz" for entrepreneurs preparing to launch a new business since you can keep even your MIA friends updated on your latest launch developments.

The e-mail marketing solution I use for my businesses is Constant Contact. They are an industry leader and offer an easy to navigate backoffice area to create your e-mail campaigns.

Take care!

Great post Stephen. I also find that uncustomised accounts are taken by the more savvy Myspace users to be either dead or spam accounts. Also, anything to encourage the visitor to stay for more then 15 seconds, be it a game, video or song will radically increase the chances of user interaction.

I've heard about Myspace marketing quite a while now. My only concern is I know that there are lots of companies who are posing themselves in myspace as fake profiles. I believe it's identity theft and phishing. What can you say about it, Myspaceman?

Very Good Post Stephen

Myspace does represent a huge opportunity. In their terms of use the do require that you do not operate a business from Myspace ... however this does not seem to be a serious rule, or one that is enforced at this point anyway.

I guess the team at Myspace are trying to avoid their network turning into a enormous spam machine ... I have seen so called marketers who keep posting dozens of ads and have not understood the true importance of relationship marketing and a more subtle and sensitive approach.

With regards fake profiles I would say that no one is who they really claim to be online ... most people exaggerate. That said deliberately misleading people in order to rip them off is fraud and therefore illegal.

I know a marketer who runs a successful Myspace that gets plenty of leads and sales who ran a test ...

He replicated his site but created a young female as the personality for the site. That was his only change, he posted the same ads and forum postings. Anyway his results where amazing within weeks the traffic on this new site had trounced his existing site. A true example of Girl Power perhaps.

And, who does? I think this is the most important thing about the web: you can be whoever you want. Everybody play his role and this doesn’t depersonalize people. Au contraire.

Great idea Stephen, the only issue is that MySpace pops-up that nasty warning box for on-site form submissions. Video content is always another great way to keep users returning - especially an engaging blog.
