Default Big problem for Email marketers

This could be some very important information if you are an email marketer. Most consumers now have a different definition of spam than you might think.

Q Interactive and MarketingSherpa conducted a survey to find out what consumers think spam is, what they think happens when they report spam and why they report emails as spam.

Even when marketing messages are from known senders 56 percent considers it spam if the messages is not interesting to them.

50 percent consider messages from companies they know to be spam if they send messages too often.

A lot of people use the "report spam" button and their reason for reporting something as spam might be a little surprising to some people.

41 percent report it as spam because it was of no interest to them.

20 percent report it as spam because they receive too much email from everyone.

43 percent use the report spam button hoping to unsubscribe from a list rather than using the unsubscribe link furnished by the advertiser in the email.

There are a lot more interesting and useful details in this survey that you might want to be aware of if you do any email marketing. You might want to take some of it into consideration. This is a link to that additional information Email Marketers in Trouble as ‘Spam’ Definition Evolves to Mean ‘Unwanted’

Whoa, that's good info to know. And even though WE as marketers see things so differently, when you look at it from average Joe surfers viewpoint I can see where some of them don't understand and hit the spam button for the wrong reasons.

Those statistics scare me, I just started up my newsletter which requires a double opt-in that comes with all the bells and whistles to make it legal, and I can just see now all my emails going into people's spam folders because others click the button rather than unsubscribing if they decide they aren't interested.
