I don't mind paying for good software at all, especially for security.
However my daughter's tech support company which is pretty big in this area told us to use the free version of Avira AntiVir AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic - More than Security

They said it works better than Norton and other name brands.
So I've been using for quite some time and I never have problems.
It does an auto daily virus update.

Only problem is it keeps giving me warnings that my Alexa toolbar is spyware.
Annoying to have to keep closing the warning windows.

I have not tried all the free programs. I use AVG in conjunction with a Firewall, and I have found it to be effective. Best of all it is free.

I liked Avast and Mcafee, they are tested and proven.

(Caveat: not endorsing them though.. :-) )

Shoot shoot shoot.

I told you I was using AntiVir a free program. The computer security company told me it was MUCH better than Norton or McAfee.

For the past 2 days my system has been bogging down and getting hung up.
Today in came to a crawl then a screeching halt. I didn't know if it was a hardware problem or what.

Did some anti-spware and virus scans and my brand new computer (well just a few months old) is RIDDLED with crap. I have spyware, worms, trojans, you name it. Antivir was able to clean some of it up, but wasnt protecting me well at all and I didn't know it. It's a wonder my PC worked at all.

So even though I am in the middle of trying to launch an affiliate program for one of the biggest companies on the planet - I had to cancel everything and spent the whole day trying to clean up all this junk.

I just bought and downloaded Kaspersky which is I think about the most expensive but I think (hope) also the best. Like I said above paying for a good solution was never a problem for me. I just trusted the advice from a computer security company, who should have known.

Doing a scan now to try clean the rest up. Hoping this takes care of everything. I really can't afford to be crippled and moving slow right now.

Arghhhh. Thanks for letting me vent!

Default Some major brands antivirus products failed test

Virus Bulletin is very well known for testing antivirus products. They have been doing it since 1998.

Recently they tested 32 antivirus products. 17 of them failed the test. In order to pass software must detect 100 percent of the commonly-circulating 'WildList' thrown at it without signaling any false positives.

Programs that failed included those from Sophos, Kaspersky, Fortinet, Trend Micro, CA Home, and PC Tools. But some did more poorly than others. The CA Home product missed 40. Kaspersky missed 1.

The worst performer was a product that isn't well known (Kingsoft AntiVirus). It missed 120.

This link gives more details about this test security.itworld.com - Big brands slip up in antivirus tests

I am not sure which is best. I have used NOD32, Avira, and now on the PC I just invested in there is McAfee.

I did get those daily pop-up ads for upsells with Avira. I am not sure the level of protection any of them gave. My problems were with restriction attempting to log in to some of my resources such as my webhost and a keyword research too. I have also been unable to load Alexa toolbar at all. It either restricts it or deletes it. I have tried to disable in order to load but the software would still delete it.

The support at places I was having problems accessing told me there was no problem at their site and the most common cause was anti-virus or firewalls.
